Diagnostic Imaging
What diagnostics are available at Barry’s Vets?
Diagnostic imaging tools are used by our vets to accurately diagnose, and treat pets when required. It helps to give our vets the full picture of your pet’s health status and we can use our in-house equipment and also refer for either a CT or MRI if necessary.
Rest assured that Barry’s Vets have purpose-built facilities and modern equipment to provide the most thorough diagnostic investigation possible for your pet. This allows us to provide prompt diagnosis’ and pursue an appropriate treatment plan.

Radiography
Our vets have the use of an x-ray machine which helps to visualise bones, tissue and internal organs. Radiographs are particularly useful when it comes to diagnosing dental issues, heart and lung problems. These images are captured by firing beams of radiation through your pet’s body.

Ultrasonography
This technique allows the vet to visualise most soft tissues including muscles, tendons and ligaments. This is done by using a probe which sends beams of sound waves into your pet’s body which are then reflected back – this creates a picture of the internal tissues to be studied by the vet.

Dermatology
Our experienced vets can run skin cytology tests as well as examine skin scrapes and complete allergy testing from your pet’s blood serum. This will all help to provide an accurate diagnosis for any skin conditions your pet could be affected by.

Urinalysis
This test is used to diagnose various urinary tract diseases, along with other major diseases such as liver failure. We can also run other urine tests in-house, including cytology, culture and sensitivity.

Gastroscopy & Bronchoscopy
These techniques are performed using a long, narrow tube with a medical camera fitted at the end. This tube is then passed down your pet’s airway and into either the stomach or lungs whilst under general anaesthesia to check for any abnormalities affecting their respiratory or gastrointestinal systems.

In-house blood analysers
This allows us to screen your pets blood for a number of different tests, including: routine haematology and biochemistry; SDMA for kidney function; serum thyroxine; therapeutic monitoring. We also have a good relationship with an external laboratory who can offer a further range of tests.
